Kansas City Royals History

Began as an expansion franchise in 1968, the Kansas City Royals replenished the city with a baseball franchise in the absence of the relocated Kansas City Athletics. The first games of the infant Royals were played in old Municipal Stadium in 1969. The expansion franchise posted a 69-93 record, the best of four-expansion teams to play that year. It took just three years for the Kansas City Royals to post their first winning record at 85-76.

Six playoff appearances round out the resume of the Kansas City Royals. A pair of World Series appearances yields the Royals a loss in 1980 to the Philadelphia Phillies and a win vs. the Saint Louis Cardinals in 1985. The Kansas City Royals 102-60 record in 1977 is by far the team's best winning

Season. Unfortunately the Royals have missed the playoffs since the 1985 world title. The winning record in 2003 is the first above .500 season for Kansas City since 1993.

World Series Appearances:

  • 1985 vs. St. Louis Cardinals W 4-3
  • 1980 vs. Philadelphia Phillies L 2-4
